Workshops

Catch me if you can: Keep your blade free and at your command

In the tradition of Salvator Fabris, one is instructed to not „molest“ the opponent’s sword. We will explore the reasons and how to put this into practice in this seminar. The goal is to become more agile with the sword and not be caught by people who try to force a bind. Body mechanics will play a role just as big as forming a coherent concept of moving with a rapier according to Fabris. This seminar is suitable to both beginners and intermediate students.

You need a rapier and a mask; other protective equipment can be used but we can always adjust the exercises accordingly. If you want to go the extra mile, practice keeping your arm extended on shoulder height beforehand.

Double the swords, double the fun

Two swords are one of the fanciest weapon combinations that historical fencing has to offer. It’s also one of the most challenging ones to learn. Luckily, the Bolognese fencing masters Achille Marozzo and Antonio Manciolino provided us with some really useful lessons, packed into their Assalti(-like) chapters.

In this workshop, we distill a couple of rules that will help you manage your tactical approach with two swords. At the end, the manifold motion patterns from the texts should make a bit more sense and you can really start your journey into dual wielding.
You will need at least two swords (duh), a fencing mask and throat protection and light fencing gloves. If you want to practice with some intensity, I highly recommend full fencing equipment.

The right timing for the right moment

A quick blow to the opponent is possible without losing your own cover, as every attack harbours the risk of a counter-attack. In addition to distance, the magic word is tempo. The aim is to gain an understanding of the physical movements involved in fencing. The interplay of all parts of the body, as well as the blade, ensures a fast strike tempo and allows the actions of the opponent to be better anticipated.

In order to be able to apply this in the fight, the tactical level must also be illuminated. When is the right moment for a single action attack or do you need to prepare your attack in any way before?
